KOMO-TEC forged piston and forged connecting rod kit for Toyota 2ZR

The KOMO-TEC forged piston and forged connecting rod kit was developed for high-performance Lotus Elise models with the Toyota 2ZR engine. It increases the thermal and mechanical load capacity of the engine, thereby creating a stable basis for power levels in the range of 300 hp and above.

The delivery includes four specially designed forged pistons and four matched forged connecting rods. Piston rings and piston pins are also included.

Suitable for

  • Lotus Elise with Toyota 2ZR engine

  • Lotus Elise with approx. 220 hp

  • Lotus Elise with approx. 240 hp

  • Lotus Elise with approx. 250 hp

  • Corresponding models from model year 2010

  • Performance-optimized 2ZR engines after technical inspection

The exact compatibility and the required engine configuration must be checked before ordering based on the specific vehicle.

Developed for higher engine performance

In the development of the standard 2ZR engine, low emissions and low internal friction losses were the focus. This is reflected, among other things, in the comparatively delicate construction of the standard pistons and connecting rods.

At engine outputs of about 300 hp and above, the stock pistons can reach their thermal limits and the stock connecting rods can reach their mechanical load limits.

The significantly higher thermal load requires an improved heat flow in the area of the piston crown and fire bridge. For this purpose, the material cross-sections and dimensions of the forged pistons were specifically adjusted.

Tests with forged pistons in the unchanged stock dimensions did not achieve the required improvements. Therefore, an independent piston-connecting rod system was developed.

Coordinated functional package

The forged pistons and forged connecting rods are precisely coordinated in their design. The length of the connecting rods was specifically adapted to the dimensions of the pistons.

Pistons and connecting rods may only be used as a complete KOMO-TEC functional package.

The following combinations are not permitted:

  • KOMO-TEC forged connecting rods with stock pistons

  • KOMO-TEC forged connecting rods with pistons from other manufacturers

  • KOMO-TEC forged pistons with stock connecting rods

  • KOMO-TEC forged pistons with connecting rods from other manufacturers

Mixing with non-coordinated components can lead to incorrect piston positioning, unacceptable clearances, or severe engine damage.

X-Beam forged connecting rods

The innovative X-Beam profile of the connecting rods combines high bending and buckling stiffness with a shape-stable lower connecting rod eye.

As a result, the load on the connecting rod bearing remains as evenly distributed as possible even at high speeds and high mean pressures. The design is specifically tailored to the significantly higher mechanical requirements of performance-enhanced compressor engines.

High mechanical loads

The effective mean pressure increases from about 12 bar in the standard naturally aspirated engine variant to around 22 bar in a compressor engine with about 300 hp.

At a mean pressure of 22 bar, a force of approximately 11,115 N acts on the piston. This corresponds to a weight force of more than 1,000 kg.

During combustion, the load can increase to about four times due to the significantly higher peak pressure. This can temporarily exert forces of around four tons on the piston and connecting rod.

These load values illustrate why the moving engine components must be designed as a complete system at high power levels.

Important assembly note

The installation requires extensive knowledge in engine construction and may only be carried out by a qualified engine specialist.

Before assembly, the engine block, cylinder bores, crankshaft, and all connection dimensions must be measured professionally. Piston clearance, ring gap, bearing clearance, compression ratio, and all relevant distances must be checked and adjusted according to the technical specifications.

All moving components must be weighed, checked, and balanced as a complete crankshaft assembly before assembly.

Important break-in note

An engine built with new pistons, piston rings, and connecting rods must be broken in according to the specified break-in procedure.

During the break-in phase, load, RPM, and operating conditions must be strictly adhered to. All operating parameters must be checked before calling for full engine performance.

Important note

The forged piston and forged connecting rod kit increases the engine's load capacity but does not alone produce a defined increase in power. The actual possible engine power depends on the complete engine assembly, fuel supply, charging, cooling, and proper engine tuning.
