KOMO-TEC shortened axle ratio "Close Ratio"

The shortened axle ratio was developed for Lotus models with Toyota 2GR-FE engine and manual EA60 transmission. It provides a more dynamic ratio, improves effective acceleration, and reduces the significant drop in RPM when shifting from 4th to 5th gear.

The standard EA60 transmission is fundamentally balanced in the first four gears. However, the very long ratios of gears 5 and 6, as well as the large jump between 4th and 5th gear, detract from the dynamics.

With the KOMO-TEC Close-Ratio axle ratio, the gears are more harmoniously spaced. The engine stays better within the usable RPM and power range after shifting up – especially in gears 5 and 6, the improvement is noticeably felt.

Two axle ratios for a harmonious result

The Toyota EA60 transmission uses two different axle or differential ratios: one for gears 1 to 4 and another for gears 5 and 6.

In this upgrade, both ratios are replaced. The actual gear wheels and gear ratios remain standard. This results in a harmonious overall ratio across all six gears.

Gears 1 to 4 are shortened by about 7% and gears 5 to 6 by about 11%.

Improved connection from 4th to 5th gear

Based on the specified speeds at 7,200 RPM, the distance between 4th and 5th gear is reduced from about 66 to approximately 51 km/h.

When shifting up at 7,200 RPM, the engine speed theoretically decreases:

  • With stock gearing to about 5,490 RPM

  • With close-ratio gearing to about 5,720 RPM

The engine thus drops about 230 RPM less out of its power range.

Reduced final drive ratio

The theoretical speed in 6th gear at 7,200 RPM is reduced from 315.21 km/h to 281.15 km/h. In return, the traction at the wheel improves, thereby enhancing acceleration within the individual gears.

The shortened axle ratio can be ideally combined with our differential lock for the EA60 transmission.

Important Note

Due to the shortened gearing, the engine speed increases at the same driving speed. This may result in additional or more noticeable mechanical noises during operation.

The specified speeds are calculated values. The actual achievable speed depends, among other things, on tire type, engine power, RPM limit, aerodynamics, and driving conditions.

The installation requires disassembly and proper readjustment of the transmission and may only be carried out by a qualified specialist.
