KOMO-TEC engine build and engine upgrade

With our configurable engine build, you can assemble the desired performance range suitable for your vehicle, the existing engine, and the intended use. You decide which engine base is used, in what assembly condition the engine should be delivered, which additional cylinder head optimizations are desired, and whether the engine should be shipped or installed as a complete all-inclusive solution in our facility.

The configurator guides you through four steps to the suitable engine build.

Step 1: Select engine base

First, you choose whether to use a new short block or the existing engine as the basis for the rebuild.

New short block

In this variant, the engine build is based on a new short block. It is particularly suitable when no technically suitable existing engine is available or when a new engine base is intentionally to be used.

The further assembly and delivery scope depends on the options chosen subsequently.

Use existing engine

Alternatively, the existing engine can be used as the basis for the upgrade.

In this case, the complete engine must always be delivered. The delivery of individual components or already disassembled assemblies is not sufficient for a complete inspection, clear assignment, and proper processing.

The complete engine is disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and properly measured. Only then can it be reliably assessed which components can be reused and which parts require processing, revision, or renewal.

The mileage and maintenance history alone do not allow for a conclusive assessment of the technical condition.

Complete inspection of the existing engine

In an upgrade based on the existing engine, the engine block and cylinder heads are completely disassembled. All components intended for the rebuild are cleaned, checked, and measured.

The inspection includes, depending on the respective engine design, among other things:

  • Engine block and cylinder running surfaces

  • Crankshaft and bearing points

  • Pistons and connecting rods

  • Main and connecting rod bearings

  • Flat and sealing surfaces

  • Cylinder heads

  • Valves and valve seats

  • Valve guides

  • Camshafts

  • Components of the valve train

  • Threads and fastening points

  • Oil and coolant channels

Components with wear, damage, or unacceptable dimensional deviations will be properly reworked or revised as far as technically possible.

If a revision is not possible or economically sensible, the affected components must be replaced. Additional work or spare parts that are only recognized as necessary after disassembly and measurement will be coordinated with the customer before execution.

Step 2: Select the assembly condition of the engine

In the second step, you determine in which assembly condition the engine should be built and delivered.

Only assembled short block

With this selection, the engine block including the intended crank drive is assembled.

The short block forms the mechanical basis of the engine. The cylinder heads are not mounted on the engine block in this variant.

This version is suitable for customers and specialized companies who wish to carry out the further engine assembly themselves.

The exact scope of delivery depends on the chosen engine configuration. Cylinder heads, valve drive, timing drive, and engine peripherals are only included if they are explicitly listed as part of the order.

Engine block with mounted cylinder heads

In this variant, the assembled short block and the cylinder heads are properly mounted together. The engine is thus mechanically "closed" or built as a long block.

The scope includes, depending on the chosen configuration:

  • Assembly of the short block

  • Preparation of the cylinder heads

  • Installation of the cylinder head gaskets

  • Installation of the cylinder heads

  • Proper fastening according to technical specifications

  • Installation of the agreed valve and timing drive

  • Adjustment and control of the timing

  • Checking the mechanical clearance

Additional components and other engine peripherals are only included if they are explicitly listed in the selected configuration.

Step 3: Configure cylinder head optimizations

In the third step, additional optimizations for the cylinder heads can be selected.

The desired components and modifications are assembled through the separate cylinder head configurator. This allows the cylinder head to be specifically tailored to the targeted engine performance, the intended maximum RPM, and the later application.

Possible options may include, depending on the engine configuration:

  • Machining and optimization of the cylinder heads

  • Reworking of valve seats and valve guides

  • High-performance valves

  • Reinforced valve springs

  • Titanium valve spring retainers

  • Sport camshafts

  • Optimized hydraulic lifters

  • Rockers or roller rocker safety systems

  • Other engine-specific valve train components

Which measures are sensible or necessary depends on the complete engine setup. Especially with sport camshafts, increased maximum RPM, and high thermal loads, all components of the valve train must be technically coordinated.

If no additional cylinder head options are selected, the refurbishment and assembly will be carried out according to the agreed basic scope.

Step 4: Select shipping engine or all-inclusive solution

In the last step, you decide whether the configured engine should be shipped or picked up, or fully installed in our facility into the vehicle.

Selection "without installation"

If you only want to receive the assembled engine, choose the option "without installation".

The engine will be provided in the previously selected assembly condition:

  • As an assembled short block or

  • As a mechanically closed engine with mounted cylinder heads

The engine can then be shipped or picked up by arrangement.

With the selection "without installation", the following services are not included:

  • Removal of the existing engine from the vehicle

  • Installation of the assembled engine

  • Vehicle-side connection work

  • Filling and venting of all systems

  • Commissioning in the vehicle

  • Breaking in the engine

  • Individual test bench tuning

  • Final test bench run

Installation, commissioning, breaking in, and tuning must be carried out by a suitably qualified specialist company.

Selection with installation or vehicle model

If you select the installation or the corresponding vehicle model in the configurator, you will receive a complete all-inclusive solution.

You deliver the complete vehicle to us and pick it up again after the agreed work is completed, fully assembled, broken in, and tuned.

The all-inclusive solution includes, depending on the chosen configuration:

  • Delivery and technical incoming inspection of the vehicle

  • Removal of the existing engine

  • Complete disassembly of the engine

  • Cleaning and measuring of the engine block and cylinder heads

  • Technical inspection of all reusable components

  • Required processing and revision within the agreed scope

  • Assembly of the short block

  • Processing and assembly of the cylinder heads

  • Assembly of the selected upgrade components

  • Complete reassembly of the engine

  • Installation of the engine in the vehicle

  • Connection of the engine peripherals

  • Filling with the required operating fluids

  • Professional commissioning

  • Testing of all relevant operating parameters

  • Breaking in the newly built engine

  • Individual tuning on the dynamometer

  • Final test bench run

  • Handing over the ready-to-operate vehicle

This gives you a complete solution from a single source: deliver the vehicle and pick it up finished after the work is completed.

Overview of the configuration process

  1. Select new short block or existing engine as the basis

  2. Choose only assembled short block or engine block with mounted cylinder heads

  3. Add additional cylinder head optimizations via the cylinder head configurator

  4. Select "Without installation" for the shipping engine or installation or vehicle model for the all-inclusive solution

Important note regarding the existing engine

If the existing engine is used as the basis, the complete engine must always be delivered for the execution of the work. Individual components or already separated assemblies are not sufficient.

The complete engine must be technically suitable for the planned assembly. The final assessment is only possible after complete disassembly, thorough cleaning, and professional measurement.

If damage, excessive wear, or unacceptable deviations in dimensions are detected, additional machining or replacement parts may be required. These will be coordinated with the customer before execution.

Important note regarding the scope of delivery

The specific scope of delivery and services results from the configuration chosen in the configurator.

Components, machining, attachments, and services that are not explicitly selected or listed in the order confirmation are not included in the scope of services.

Important note regarding the shipping engine

If "without installation" is selected, the responsibility for proper installation, correct oil and coolant supply, commissioning, running-in, and engine tuning lies with the executing specialist company.

Before the first full-load operation, all relevant operating parameters must be checked. This includes, in particular, oil pressure, fuel supply, air-fuel ratio, temperatures, timing, and, if applicable, boost pressure.

Incorrect assembly, commissioning, or tuning can lead to severe engine damage.

Important note regarding engine performance

The assembled engine does not generate a fixed defined additional power on its own. The actual achievable power and stability depend on the complete vehicle and engine assembly.

Decisive factors include, among others:

  • Intake and exhaust system

  • Turbocharging

  • Fuel supply

  • Engine and charge air cooling

  • Engine control

  • Fuel used

  • Individual test bench tuning

  • Planned purpose of use

For reliable operation, all components must be technically coordinated with each other.
