Short axle ratio 5.0:1 for Lotus Elise Mk2 and Exige Mk2 with 2ZZ engine

The KOMO-TEC axle ratio with a ratio of 5.0:1 was developed for Lotus Elise Mk2 and Exige Mk2 with Toyota 2ZZ engine and C64 manual transmission.

Compared to the stock axle ratio of 4.63:1, the overall ratio is shortened by about 8%. This results in all gears being shorter, and the vehicle accelerates noticeably more agilely. The engine reaches its powerful RPM range faster, leading to significantly improved performance, especially on winding country roads and racetracks.

Noticeably more agile driving behavior

With the shorter axle ratio, a higher drive torque is available at the wheel in every gear. The vehicle responds more directly to throttle movements and accelerates noticeably more spontaneously after corners and when switching between different speed ranges.

The engine power itself is not increased by the axle ratio. However, the existing power is utilized more effectively in acceleration.

Optimal in combination with a limited-slip differential

The combination of the short axle ratio with a suitable limited-slip differential is particularly recommended.

While the shorter ratio increases the drive torque at the wheels, the limited-slip differential improves its transfer to the road. This allows for more traction to be built up, especially when accelerating out of tight corners.

The combination offers decisive advantages:

  • Improved acceleration

  • More effective power transfer

  • More traction at corner exit

  • Reduced slip at the inside drive wheel

  • More direct response behavior

  • Better utilization of the powerful RPM range

  • Significantly increased performance during sporty driving

  • Ideal for track days and racing use

Gear ratio comparison

Stock ratio4.63:1

The ratio is approximately 8% shorter compared to the stock. At the same driving speed, the engine RPM is correspondingly higher. At the same time, the theoretically achievable speed in the individual gears is reduced.

Suitable for

  • Lotus Elise Mk2 with Toyota 2ZZ engine and C64 transmission

  • Lotus Elise 111R with C64 transmission

  • Lotus Exige Mk2 with Toyota 2ZZ engine and C64 transmission

  • Other 2ZZ applications with C64 transmission after technical inspection

Compatibility must be checked before ordering based on vehicle model, engine code, transmission type, and existing transmission configuration.

Advantages

  • Short axle ratio of 5.0:1

  • Stock ratio 4.63:1

  • About 8% shorter overall ratio

  • Shorter ratio for all forward gears

  • Noticeably more agile acceleration

  • Faster reaching of the powerful RPM range

  • More direct response behavior

  • Significantly improved performance

  • Especially suitable for sporty road vehicles and track days

  • Optimal for combination with a limited-slip differential

Scope of delivery

  • 1 × axle ratio 5.0:1 for the Toyota C64 transmission

Limited-slip differential, transmission bearings, seals, operating fluids, and other mounting parts are not included in the delivery unless expressly stated otherwise.

Possible additional transmission noise

Due to the construction-related slightly increased tooth flank play, the transmission may operate slightly louder with this axle ratio than with the stock ratio.

Slight additional running or gear noise may occur and do not fundamentally represent a technical defect. A correct installation and proper adjustment of the gearing are prerequisites.

Important installation note

Installation requires complete disassembly and subsequent readjustment of the transmission. The installation may only be carried out by a qualified transmission or motorsport specialist.

Tooth flank play, load image, bearing preload, and all installation dimensions must be adjusted and checked according to the technical specifications. Worn bearings, synchronizer rings, seals, and other transmission components should be inspected during the overhaul and replaced if necessary.
